At UMC, we define service-learning as “a method of teaching that incorporates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection activities that meet course objectives and address community-defined needs. This “learn by doing” approach enhances learning, teaches a sense of civic responsibility, and encourages lifelong civic engagement.
Service-learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting where participants learn and develop through active participation. Service-learning combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful community service.
Service-learning allows students to gain real world skills while contributing to the community. If you have a project that meets the educational goals of one or more of our courses, we might be able to set up a service-learning project.
