Crookston, Minn.

More than 60 College in the High School instructors from 42 area school districts served by the program coordinated by the U of M Crookston's Center for Adult Learning attended this year's CIHS Workshop at UMC on Monday.

While on campus, the teachers took part in Peer-Faculty Discipline Specific Working Sessions across 14 disciplines, and also participated in a professional development presentation put on by the Northwestern Mental Health Center's Timothy Denney, M.S.

The title of Denny's training was "Whats's going on here? Identifying Mental Health Difficulties in Classroom Behavior."

Denny detailed things teachers can do to identify potential mental health concerns with students such as anxiety, depression, and more, and offered tips that can be utilized in the classroom to help students work through these mental health situations to have success both in and out of the classroom, set goals for completing their work, and more.

Crookston High School art teacher Gary Stegman represented CHS at the workshop. He teaches CIHS-level art courses and in the fall is adding a CIHS humanities course. UMC?CAL?CIHS?Coordinator?Dana?Trickey said that nearly 70 students have signed up for the course.

UMC CAL's College in the High School program is accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnership (NACEP), and earlier this spring earned reaccreditation from NACEP.

Currently, UMC CIHS serves nearly 1,200 high school students in the region annually.
