Interview spring 2007 by Communications Student Intern Maretta Peterson, '07, communication major
What are you driven to discover in your major?
The more classes I take, I discover how children are developing. Not just how to teach them, but how they're developing. Just learning different techniques to get through to them without them even knowing that they're learning.
What have you learned that surprised you most so far?
A lot of it is just how smart kids really are. How early on they can perceive things. How early they can learn things.
What drives you to study this field?
Because I want to be able to help children, I want to be able to teach to the best of my own abilities. I don't want to shortchange the children and I want to be confident in my own abilities.
What career goals do you have?
I can teach children from birth through third grade. I can do infant/toddler, preschool and all the way up to third grade. I would like to focus on the primary grades -- first, second and third grades -- that would be ideal.
Tell me why you chose the U of M, Crookston:
I heard about the program in a child development class that I took in ninth grade and we took a tour of UMC's child center and I was impressed. It was close to home. ? I also went post secondary.?
Describe what you like best about the U of M, Crookston:
I like the small classes, especially once you get out of the generals and get into classes that are specific to your major. You can get comfortable with your classmates and feel open to speak freely.
Describe your interaction with the faculty and staff on campus:
I've had a lot of positive experiences with the staff. You feel like the instructors are concerned about your success and they will go the extra mile to help you.
Describe what you like best about your classes:
Small class sizes. I feel like I benefit more in the classes because I feel like I'm free to interact with the instructor and the other students.
Describe what has been the most challenging for you as you pursue your educational career:
I'm a big procrastinator. Forcing myself to sit down and get things done.
Why would you recommend that others attend the U of M, Crookston?
The laptop gives you the ability to feel connected. I like the smaller, intimate campus.
