Interview spring 2007 by Communications Student Intern Maretta Peterson, '07, communication major
What are you driven to discover in your major?
To find out how I can better help the youth of today become prepared for their life later on.
What have you learned that surprised you most so far?
Everyday is a new challenge. There's something that comes up everyday that you're not prepared for, but you just kind of have to wing it and hope for the best.
What drives you to study this field?
I've always liked kids growing up and helping out at basketball camps during my high school years. I've always been around kids and enjoyed them, so I decided to get a job that deals with kids.
What career goals do you have?
To get a job somewhere and hopefully be able to end up with some sort of coaching job as well and just to always enjoy what I'm doing.
Tell me why you chose the U of M, Crookston:
Sports was one of the main reasons I came. Another reason was UMC is close to home and I used to have family living up here.
Describe what you like best about the U of M, Crookston:
The small town atmosphere where you at least know everybody on campus and the community is close-knit and supportive.
Describe your interaction with the faculty and staff on campus:
They care a lot and if you have struggles in class they come to you and are willing to help you. Even if it isn't dealing with school, they are still willing to talk to you. They are more like friends than instructors.
Describe what you like best about your classes:
Most my classes have a small amount of people in them that allows more interaction with instructors and classmates. They are really activity driven instead of just sitting around listening to lectures all day.
Describe what has been the most challenging for you as you pursue your educational career:
Probably the increase in the amount of homework and studying.
Why would you recommend that others attend the U of M, Crookston?
For the small-time atmosphere and the friendly students and staff. It's a good school.
