Promotion & Tenure 

Tenure is the keystone for academic freedom and excellence, awarded for academic and professional merit. The Regents Policy on Faculty Tenure (tenure regulations) is the comprehensive institutional code that articulates the formal relationship between the University and its faculty. The tenure regulations were adopted by the Board of Regents in 1945 and continues to uphold "the conviction that a well-defined statement of rules is essential to the protection of academic freedom and to the promotion of excellence at the University of Minnesota. A well-designed promotion and tenure system ensures that considerations of academic quality will be the basis for academic personnel decisions, and thus provides the foundation for academic excellence." (Preamble, Regents Policy on Faculty Tenure).

Leaves & Sabbaticals

Academic development leaves allow faculty to devote concentrated time to studies, investigations, research, scholarly writing, and artistic projects. Such leaves may also be used for curriculum development and other improvements in teaching practice.

Eligibility
A tenured faculty member is eligible to apply for a sabbatical leave of up to one year after six academic years of service. A contract faculty member may be awarded a sabbatical leave of up to one year after six academic years of service. Policy and form can be found here

Single Semester Leave – UMC’s quota for 2016-2017 is two

Probationary and contract faculty are eligible for a single semester leave after two academic or fiscal years of service in a University faculty appointment of 67 percent time or greater. Tenured faculty are eligible for a single semester leave after four academic or fiscal years of service in an appointment of 67 percent time or greater. Policy and form can be found here

Professional Development Leaves for Academic Professional and Administrative Employees

Eligible academic professional and administrative (P&A) employees (93xx, 96xx, and 97xx) are provided opportunities for professional development leaves, to include mini, short-term, and extended leaves. Policy and forms can be found here

December 1, 2015 All application materials due to the Department Head
December 14, 2015 Department Head recommendations due in Academic Affairs: electronic copies sent to bkeinath with a copy to cournia; signed originals sent to the Academic Affairs Office.
December 22, 2015 Requests reviewed, voted on, and ranked (if necessary) at Department Heads meeting.
January 7, 2016 Academic Affairs sends recommendations to the Chancellor
January 14, 2016 Information on faculty selected forwarded to Minneapolis by Academic Affairs
